New Family Information

So, You're Interested in Joining FSC

We're glad to hear from you! FSC is a vibrant community now entering it's 90th year of providing thoughtful, caring and professional instruction in skiing and ski racing.  We are happy you are considering joining our program.

Is FSC right for me?

The Mission of FSC is to impart the joys of skiing and the life-long lessons of healthy competition to the children of its broad and open membership.  We pride ourselves on developing skiers who not only excel at alpine racing but whose love for the sport lasts a lifetime.  Our athletes are just as likely to be found ripping up the bumps on Avalanche, hitting jumps in the park or cruising down Tramway as they are running gates at Mittersill.

So how do you know if FSC is right for your child?  For starters you do need to be aware that FSC provides instruction in alpine ski racing, we are not a learn-to-ski program.   All FSC athletes must enter the program already skiing at an intermediate to expert level, with at minimum 3 to 4 years of skiing experience.  Children should be able to load and unload a chairlift without assistance.

Here are some additional FAQ’s that will help you decide if FSC is right for your family.

  • How often does FSC meet? Our Weekend Program meets both Saturday and Sunday, beginning the weekend after Thanksgiving (pending snow) and continue through the last weekend of March.  Training during the Christmas and February school vacation weeks is also included in the program.  We also offer training opportunities during the week for an additional fee.
  • What equipment will my child need?  Equipment requirements vary by age group.  Our U8s need only single pair of all-mountain skis, poles and a well-fitting pair of ski boots.  As athletes age and progress, they will require more specialized equipment including multiple pairs of skis, protective equipment and race-specific boots.
  • What is required of me as a parent?  All FSC members are required to assist in the running of races hosted by FSC. Each family will be required to fulfill a minimum number of worker credits.  Anyone with a child U10 or older will be required to fill 6 credits.  The requirement for families who only have a child at the U8 level is 2 credits.  FSC will provide you with training on race worker positions prior to the start of the race season.  A limited number of non-skiing positions are available for those who have limited skiing ability.
  • Does FSC offer financial assistance? FSC understands that ski racing is an expensive sport and that circumstances sometimes arise which make the cost of our programs a financial burden.  Therefore, the Club offers financial aid packages for qualified families. In addition to proven financial need, candidates must demonstrate strong motivation and thoughtful character for skiing and ski racing.

How can I register ?

Prior to joining the waitlist, each athlete will be required to complete a ski-along with their appropriate age group.  This will allow us to gain first-hand knowledge of the skiing abilities of the prospective athlete so that they can be placed in the appropriate instructional program prior to the start of the season.  It will also allow the athlete to get an idea of what our program is like prior to joining.

To request a ski-along for your athlete, please contact Rebecca Bell at rbell@franconiaskiclub.com

FSC's Ability Policy

FSC is an alpine racing program as not a to a learn-to-ski program.  Athletes who enter our program must be proficient in certain age-appropriate skills.  The abilities of each athlete will be assessed at the start of the season.  Should any athlete be unable to demonstrate proficiency of those age-appropriate skills by the third weekend of training (as assessed by the head coach), a meeting will be set up between the parents and Program Director, and FSC will seek to assist finding the athlete alternate options for their instruction.
